Community forums best with more topics: council

It appears the next Puslinch Township community forum on Sept. 15 will include a broad range of discussion topics.

The majority of Puslinch councillors have said they prefer not to limit the discussion to one or two topics at future meetings.

Councillor Wayne Stokley, who spearheaded the move to offer community forums to gain input from residents, asked at council’s August meeting if councillors wanted a “Big Lake” theme at the next meeting or if they even wanted themes at all.

Mayor Dennis Lever said he hadn’t heard anything new from the aggregate companies involved in the Big Lake proposal.

But councillor Susan Fielding said even if that was not the case, she liked the format for the first community forum in May, during which residents could discuss whatever interests them.

Councillor Jerry Schmidt said he likes the idea of using themes for the meetings, and the Big Lake would certainly be a good one.

Councillor Ken Roth agreed with Fielding and said it is best to leave the discussion topics up to those in attendance.

Lever said he understands that sentiment, but he would like to have at least one topic made public before the meetings.

Given the feedback from council, Stokley said it will be “status quo” for the next meeting, which is set for Sept. 15 at 7pm at the Puslinch community centre.
