Chilly weather doesn”™t deter ducks in Arthur

It takes more than chilly weather to keep a good duck down.

Event chairman Ian Turner of the Arthur Lions Club explained, “this year’s event was a bit novel in that we went together with the Arthur horticultural society which had a plant sale and the agricultural society which had a bake sale.”

He said it was a duck race, plant sale, bake sale and other events and games – to make it a larger event.

In addition, the mural dedication at the intersection of Charles and George Street was another draw for visitors.

“It’s been quite a day in  Arthur.”

He noted part of the day was dedicated to the younger folk with a bounce castle, free hot dogs, chips and milk.

“It’s kind of a wholesome family values type of day we are trying to promote with parents and kids. That is what the day is about.”

The duck race itself goes from the bridge on George Street (Highway 6) to the Charles Street bridge.

“I’ll be putting on my big boots and hope I don’t fall in.”

The event has now been running for over a decade “but every year it gets a bit bigger and better,” Turner added.

While he agreed the weather in early May can be a challenge, “It is kind of a rite of spring.”

“This is good way for Arthur and the community to start spring.”
