Residents will soon have an opportunity to provide input into design guidelines for the bridges crossing the Grand River in Downtown Elora.
These bridges include the Victoria Street Pedestrian Bridge and the County of Wellington’s Badley (Metcalfe Street) Bridge.
The public meeting is on Wednesday, May 18 at 6:30pm at the Elora Community Centre.
A presentation is to be held at 7pm. The township has retained Stantec Consulting Ltd. and BT Engineering to undertake an assessment for bridge replacement strategies of the Victoria Street pedestrian bridge. The bridge was initially constructed in 1842 and underwent many rehabilitations and replacements until it was demolished in 2005.
The stone piers were left in the river and will be used for the construction of the proposed pedestrian bridge.
“Because these projects will be intertwined, it makes complete sense to include them in the same consultation” said Andy Goldie, CAO. “Participation from the community and stakeholders is vital in creating healthy growth, open government and an opportunity for residents to share their thoughts on these critical township projects.”
In late March, the Township was informed that Philanthropic Jack R. MacDonald’s Charitable Trust made a $1,500,000 U.S donation to the Village of Elora.
Council accepted staff’s direction for the funding to be allocated toward Elora Downtown public realm improvements. This includes the construction of the Victoria Street pedestrian bridge.
