Three Upper Grand District School Board students who competed at the Waterloo-Wellington Science and Engineering Fair have won the chance to compete at the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Montreal.
The local fair took place on April 5 at Bingemans in Kitchener. Students in grades 7 through 12 from the Upper Grand and Waterloo Region showcased projects they had spent months preparing.
Many students were awarded gold, silver, bronze or pewter medals – there were also special awards and scholarships awarded.
The three UGDSB students who won an all-expenses paid trip to the Canada-wide fair are from Centennial Collegiate Vocational Institute in Guelph. Grade 10 student Allison won for her project titled “Influence of habitat on cellobiase activity,” grade 12 student Devanshi won for “A biosensor for microbial contamination,” and grade 12 student Owen won with his project “Detection of DNA integration after anhydrobiosis.”
A number of students from Centennial CVI, John Galt Public School, Laurelwoods Public School, and John McCrae Public School were also awarded medals.
The Canada-Wide Science Fair will be held at Montreal’s McGill University from May 15 to 20.
