Arts council to hold seventh annual Minto Juried Art Show

MINTO – The Minto Juried Art Show is an annual event in the Town of Minto that will be running this year for the seventh time from May 9 to 24.

It is being held at the Minto Arts Gallery, located on the third floor of the Harriston Library at 88 Mill Street.

The opening reception on May 9 will run from 6:30 to 8pm, with winners being announced at 7pm.

“We have a couple of jurors that have reviewed, I would say close to 100 pieces of art… and there are 34 entrants,” said Minto Arts Council president Juliane von Westerholt.

Each artist was allowed to enter up to three pieces and there was no theme, so artists had the freedom to fully express themselves in the media they preferred.

“Things include watercolors, oil paintings and acrylics, but we’ve also got people who do textile art… and we’ve got a couple of people who have done some sculptures,” said von Westerholt.

“It’s kind of neat. It’s such a broad spectrum of things that are in the show that it can appeal to almost anybody. There really is a lot out there.”

Reaching more artists

Artists in the show are located all across Ontario and have the chance to win monetary prizes for their work.

Prizes sponsored by the Minto Arts Council include: $200 for first place, $150 for second, $100 for third and $50 for the Viewer’s Choice Award.

There are also privately sponsored awards for:

Best Watercolour Award, $200; and

West Meadow Press and Printmaking, $100.

“We’re reaching further and further which is really cool for our little gallery, because not a lot of communities have a little gallery like we do and we’re pretty fortunate,” said von Westerholt.
