Animal control bylaw still on hold

It may be a while yet before an animal control bylaw is in place.

In October, town planner Sally Stull gave a brief update regarding the intent of the proposed bylaw such as a list of prohibited animals, prohibiting the keeping of livestock on parcels less than two acres, and regulating the number of animals.

The issue arose from a complaint received within the municipality.

Staff included options such reinstating the former Erin Township animal regulating bylaw which was repealed in error.

A lengthy discussion prevailed which included discussions regarding grandfathering; excessive restrictions; general consensus to prohibit exotic animals as presented; non-consensus with respect to prohibiting or limiting the number of animal units per defined acreage; dividing the proposed by-law into two separate by-laws; and working with the two parties to see if a resolution could be achieved.

CAO Frank Miele advised council that he would review the issue and provide council with a report to address same.

On Nov. 20 Mayor Lou Maieron asked if there were any updates.

He said people dealing with the pigeon issue have opportunity to see the mayor regularly and ask the question.

Stull said unless council deems this as priority, there has been a fair number of other matters for the planning department to deal with.

She anticipated the animal bylaw issue would be before council early in the new year.
