Action Read, Immigrant Services provide literacy opportunities to new Canadians

Action Read, in partnership with Immigrant Services, launched its Early Start Family Literacy Program at Immigrant Services Guelph-Wellington in Guelph on Feb. 9.

The free program will run each Friday from 9:30 to 11:30am until the end of June.  It is open to any parent and caregiver with children up to six years old. All participants must register for the program at the site.

With over 30 years of family literacy programming, Action Read brings a depth of experience, connection and expertise to the program, officials say.

Immigrant Services also brings extensive experience in helping newcomers settle in Guelph and Wellington.

“When parents are more involved and engaged in early learning, there is ample evidence to show that children tend to do better socially and academically,” stated Action Read family literacy coordinator Brenda MacDonald.

“When families experience the pressures of a new language, as well as a new cultural, social and employment context, providing additional supports becomes critical.

“To this end, Action Read is delighted to contribute to the fantastic work already being done at Immigrant Services to support families.”

Action Read programs promote and encourage a love of reading, storytelling and play-based learning.

Officials say the program helps young children obtain the early learning skills, social skills and routines to make successful transitions to school.
