Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) students participated in the Skills Ontario Qualifying Competition, which was held at Georgian College in Barrie, on April 7.
Skills Ontario holds a qualifying competition to ensure the most prepared students move on to compete at the provincial level.
Categories in the qualifying competition included:
– carpentry (individual);
– culinary arts;
– TV and video production (team of two); and
– welding;
On April 7, 13 students from the UGDSB with their teachers, travelled to Georgian College to compete.
First place
Winning first place in the individual carpentry competition was Wellington Heights Secondary School student Jordan Burns.
Centre Wellington District High School (CWDHS) student Madison Galloway won first place in the culinary arts challenge.
Also from CWDHS, Talon Boggess and Andrew Strachan placed first in TV and video production.
Orangeville District Secondary School student Chloe Miller placed first in the welding competition.
Skills Ontario competitors from the UGDSB are supported by the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program and the Specialist High Skills Major program.
Students that placed first will move on to the Provincial Skills Competition taking place on May 8 at the Toronto Congress Centre.
“Congratulations to all UGDSB students that competed in the qualifying competition and to those who will be moving on to the Provincial Skills Competition,” officials state.
