Guelph to host one of first cannabis stores

One of the province’s first cannabis retail stores will open on Wellington County’s doorstep.

On April 11 the LCBO and Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS) announced Guelph will host one of the first four stores, along with Toronto, Kingston and Thunder Bay.

Officials say the Guelph store will be located at 304 Stone Road West, which is across the street from the Stone Road Mall in a plaza complex that currently houses Tim Hortons and Dairy Queen, among other businesses.

OCS officials say all stores will comply with provincial guidelines and local zoning bylaws, and the chosen location will minimize proximity to schools.

“The LCBO is committed to ensuring that OCS sites are responsible partners in the communities they operate in,” states an April 11 press release.

“OCS stores will operate with the same care and expertise Ontarians have come to expect of the LCBO’s long-standing and reputable history of responsible retailing practices and promoting moderate consumption.”

The province has announced plans to open 40 cannabis this year and another 40 by July, 2019. The goal is to open 150 stores by 2020.

The federal government introduced legislation last year to legalize recreational marijuana, but provinces are in charge of distribution and regulation. In Ontario the legal age to purchase recreational marijuana is 19.
