LDAWC offers two workshops in April

The Learning Disabilities Association of Wellington County is holding a couple of sessions to discuss mental health and learning disabilities and transitioning into high school.

Mental health/disabilities

A session will be held to discuss mental health and learning disabilities on April 16 from 7 to 9pm in Guelph. Admission is $15.

People with learning disabilities are two to three times more likely to experience mental health challenges. Individuals with learning disabilities are more likely to experience anxiety, depression and suicidal ideation.

But there are ways to cope and help manage mental health symptoms for those with learning disabilities. There are also strategies to help parents and caregivers.

The workshop will include presentations by Rose Freigang and Linda Di Nardo from Insight Psychology on Norfolk who will speak about the topic of mental health. Come away with practical strategies for helping with things like stress, self-esteem and depression.

High school transition

Transitioning from different phases of life can be difficult – and moving from elementary to high school is a difficult step – so preparing for and learning about this transition is vital.

The high school transition workshop, held April 25 from 7 to 9pm in Guelph for $15 is geared to parents and their children (Grades 6 to 8) with learnign disabilities or ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) who want to be more prepared for secondary school.

The evening will open with four educators – two each from the Wellington Catholic District School Board and Upper Grand District School Board – offering perspectives and tips on what to think about and what makes high school so different. The evening will feature a question and answer format.
