Public health officials are confirming there has been at least one flu-related death in the region recently.
They suspect the death of a second elementary school-aged child is also related to influenza.
“Our sympathies are with the families at this time,” stated Dr. Nicola Mercer, Medical Officer of Health and CEO for Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health (WDGPH).
“Influenza is a serious respiratory infection and the flu season is not over. In the last week we have seen the highest number of new cases as well as the highest school absenteeism this season.”
Officials are encouraging residents to get the flu shot.
“Protect yourself and your family with the flu shot now,” said Mercer.
“A recent Canadian study estimates that the vaccine is 55% effective in protecting against the Influenza B virus circulating in southwestern Ontario.”
Residents can get the flu shot at a local pharmacy or health care provider and WDGPH is extending clinic hours this weekend as follows:
– Guelph, 1 to 7pm on Friday and 10am to 2pm on Saturday; and
– Fergus and Orangeville, 2 to 7pm on Friday and 10am to 2pm on Saturday.
