Public health issues warning about extreme cold

Public health officials are alerting locals about extremely cold temperatures expected over the next few days.

A Jan. 3 press release from Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health (WDGPH) notes that Environment Canada plans to issue an extreme cold warning for Thursday evening (Jan. 4) that will last until Sunday (Jan. 7).

Extreme cold warnings are issued by Environment Canada when the temperature, including wind chill, is expected to reach -30°C for at least two hours or longer.

“Temperatures are going to be extremely low and vulnerable family members including infants and the elderly could be at risk,” stated Medical Officer of Health Dr. Nicola Mercer in a WDGPH press release.

“Watch the weather reports and prepare for extreme cold.”

When temperatures dip below -30C the risk of frostbite increases significantly, which can cause permanent damage and in severe cases result in amputation.

Prolonged exposure to extreme cold can also result in hypothermia, which can be life threatening, official say.

“Fortunately, shelters in the area are able to meet local need at this time,” stated Mercer. “Since they support residents who are most vulnerable to cold because of inadequate housing, you might consider how you can support the work of a shelter in your community.”

Officials recommend checking on vulnerable family members and neighbours to make sure they are safe.
