The number of immigrants living in Wellington County is below the national average according to the recent Census release.
On Oct. 25 Statistics Canada released the latest information from the 2016 Census including immigration and ethnocultural diversity, housing and aboriginal peoples.
Information regarding immigration includes demographics, generation status and ethnic origins.
This provides a snapshot of the populations in geographical locations.
In Centre Wellington, immigrants make up 10.2 per cent of the population, 5.9% of which are refugees. The top place of birth for immigrants in Centre Wellington are from the United Kingdom (79%), followed by the Netherlands, U.S., Germany and India.
Of the total population in Centre Wellington, 10.8% are first generation and 17.4% are second generation. Aboriginal peoples make up 1.8% of the population.
In Erin, 13.6% of the population are immigrants, of which 15.3% are refugees. United Kingdom is again the top place of birth for immigrants in Erin at 31.3%, followed by U.S., Germany, Netherlands and Poland.
First generation residents make up 14.4% of the population in Erin and 23.3% is second generation. Aboriginal peoples make up 1.6% of the population.
In Guelph-Eramosa, 12.7% of the population are immigrants, of which, 13.2 are refugees. The top place of birth for immigrants is the U.K. (25.9%), followed by the Netherlands, Italy, U.S. and Poland.
Of the total population in Guelph-Eramosa, 13.3% are first generation and 21.1% are second generation. Aboriginal peoples make up 2.2% of the population.
In Mapleton, immigrants make up 9.7% of the total population, of which 11.9% are refugees. The top place of birth for immigrants in Mapleton is Mexico (33.7%), followed by the Netherlands, U.K., U.S. and Syria.
Of the total population in Mapleton, 10.3% are first generation and 14.3% are second generation. Aboriginal peoples make up 1% of the population.
In Minto, 6.3% of the population are immigrants, of which 7.3% are refugees. The top place of birth for immigrants in Minto is the U.K. (28.2%), followed by the Netherlands, Philippines, Germany and U.S.
First generation residents make up 7.1% of the population in Minto and 11.4% are second generation. Aboriginal peoples make up 1.5% of the population.
In Puslinch, immigrants make up 16.4% of the population, of which 14.1% are refugees. The top place of birth for immigrants in Puslinch is the U.K. (25.5%) followed by India, U.S., Germany and Italy.
Of the total population in Puslinch, 17.1% are first generation and 25.2% is second generation. Aboriginal peoples make up 1.3% of the population.
In Wellington North, 8% of the population are immigrants, of which 12% are refuges. The top place of birth for immigrants in Wellington North is the U.K. (29.2%) followed by the Netherlands, Germany, Mexico and U.S.
First generation residents make up 8.7% of the population in Wellington North and 12.9% are second generation. Aboriginal peoples make up 1.7% of the population.
Provincially, immigrants make up 29.1% of the population, and 21.9% of Canada’s population. Refugees make up 17.1% of the immigrant population provincially, and 15.1% federally.
The top place of birth of immigrants is India both provincially (9.4%) and federally (8.9%).
First generation residents make up 31.1% of Ontario’s population and 23.9% of Canada’s population, while 23% are second generation in Ontario and 17.9% in Canada. Aboriginal peoples make up 2.8% of Ontario’s population and 4.9% of Canada’s population.
