County to add code to garbage bags

The chair of Wellington County’s solid waste services committee is confident problems with defective user pay garbage bags have been solved.

Bag production issues resulted in inconsistent quality, leading the county to  issue a statement on Aug. 30 apologizing for “defective” and “substandard” bags and promising to replace them.

At the Sept. 28 county council meeting, councillor Don McKay explained most of the problems reported came from Guelph-Eramosa.

Upon receiving complaints from residents, “staff went to the door and replaced the bags for them,” McKay said.

Guelph-Eramosa mayor Chris White thanked staff for their “quick, professional response” to the garbage bag issue. “Manufacturing errors occur and I think they responded very professionally,” White added.

McKay explained the problems occurred after a change in suppliers.

“The equipment was the same, but a new supplier bought the equipment and they seemed to have some problems,” he said.

Going forward McKay said the department would “make sure every bag has a code in it so in the future if we do have bags that are breaking or not functioning properly we’ll know the code and we can get straight back to the manufacturer.”
