The Wellington Catholic District School Board has approved a $99.1 million balanced budget that school officials state continues to ensure excellence in faith formation, learning and achievement.
The 2017-18 budget was approved for final submission by trustees on June 19.
The board continues to address the financial impact of declining enrolment in conjunction with the final year phase out of the declining enrolment adjustment grant, while at the same time ensuring a secure financial future. Enrolment patterns are consistent with enrolments across the province.
The board received an increase in the area of special education grants for the fourth year. In addition, the board received enhanced funding for the implementation of the recently negotiated employment agreements and employee health, dental and life benefits transition.
The board was able to implement operating efficiencies and expenditure reductions to offset revenue reductions and submit a balanced budget.
“We were able to approve a balanced budget despite some on-going budget pressures,” board chair Marino Gazzola said.
“It’s a workable budget that allows us to continue to prioritize student learning and well-being.
“The excellent work by administration has allowed for investments in the Primary Years – International Baccalaureate Program, English language learners, full day kindergarten and special education.”
The budget also addressed innovative technology enhancements and continued commitment to programs such as specialist high skills majors, in the environment, hospitality and foods, construction and graphic design.
The 2017-18 budget represents total expenditures of $99.1 million. The board’s revised budget for 2016-17 was $97.2 million.
This budget represents a 1.95% increase in total revenues and expenditures over the 2016-17 revised estimates.
This Budget does not require the use of any of the surplus balance.
The approved budget was submitted to the Ministry of Education by the June 30 deadline.
