Perth-Wellington MP John Nater issued a press release the day after the Conservative Party leadership election congratulating winner Andrew Scheer and local candidate Michael Chong on their campaigns.
“Michael stayed true to his convictions and ran an excellent campaign,” Nater stated of the Wellington -Halton Hills MP, who finished fifth.
“His strong showing in this race demonstrates the respect he is shown by Canadians and I know he will continue to be a valuable member of our party for years to come.”
Nater said Scheer, speaker of the House of Commons from 2011 to 2015, “has a proud record of defending rural and urban Canadians” and is “a person of integrity and dedication.
“I am confident his experience and work ethic will serve him well as Leader of Canada’s Official Opposition,” Nater stated.
He thanked everyone else who ran in the election and said the Conservative Party, which now has over 260,000 members across Canada, is “ready to defeat the Trudeau Liberals in 2019.”
