Public health: ‘severe’ cold weather imminent

The local health unit is offering area residents tips to cope with imminent "severe" cold weather.

"Over the coming days, the wind chill will result in severe conditions, with overnight temperatures getting close to Environment Canada’s trigger for an extreme cold weather warning," states a Jan. 5 press release from Wellington Dufferin Guelph Public Health.

"At these extreme temperatures, exposed skin can become frostbitten in minutes. Prolonged exposure can result in hypothermia."

In southern Ontario, Environment Canada issues "extreme cold warnings" when the temperature or windchill reaches -30 C.

Starting on Jan. 5, the temperature over the next few days is expected to range between –10 and –15 C depending on the location in Wellington County, according to the Weather Network.

However, with the windchill, it could feel closer to –20 to –25 C at times, particularly overnight.

The cold stretch is expected to end by Monday (Jan. 9) or Tuesday (Jan. 10).

Public health is offering a number of tips to stay safe during very cold temperatures:

– check the weather every day and limit time outside when the temperature drops;

– cover exposed skin by dressing in layers with a wind-resistant and waterproof outer layer;

– wear waterproof boots, a hat, and mittens instead of gloves; and

– check in with vulnerable family members and neighbours.
