Upper Grand District School Board trustees heard about the new selection and registration process for junior kindergarten French immersion enrolment at the Oct. 25 board meeting.
The process is set for the 2017-18 school year.
The changes to the JK registration process include:
– the window for all new JK registrants will begin on Jan. 9; and
– parents will indicate on the registration form whether their child is registering for regular English track or French immersion.
The remaining changes apply only for parents registering their child in French immersion:
– JK is the only access point to French immersion as of September 2017;
– registration documents for JK French immersion enrolment for 2017 must be received by 4pm on Jan. 26. Late forms will only be processed after all on-time registrations have been processed;
– a JK French immersion enrolment cap is in place for each French immersion site. This cap will be reviewed and if necessary adjusted annually;
– if the number of on-time JK French immersion registrants exceeds the school’s enrolment cap, a school-based random selection process (on Feb. 10) will choose the students. Siblings of students currently in French immersion will be prioritized; and
– parents will be notified by email on Feb. 28 whether their child is registered at the home French immersion school or on a wait list.
Registration for JK French immersion will be conducted in person at the school and is not prioritized on a first-come, first-served basis.
Home French immersion schools can be found at www.findmyschool.ca. A child can only be registered at one school.

Background
The changes come after the board’s 2015-16 French Review when trustees passed a number of motions regarding French as a second language.
At the May 24 board meeting staff was directed to develop a selection process for French immersion registration.
