Arthur Optimist Club wants community splash pad

The Arthur Optimist Club is hoping to fund a community splash pad in Arthur.

Club members appeared before council on Sept. 26 seeking approval for the project so they could start fundraising.

Acting president Andrew Culp said the club would pay for the development through a loan, donations and sponsorships. It is hoping to have the project complete by Canada’s 150th anniversary next year.

The proposed 2,500 square-foot splash pad would be located next to the pool at the community centre.

Culp said the benefits of a  splash pad include:

– there is no participation cost;

– the pad would be wheelchair accessible;

– no staff supervision  is needed;

– it would attract people to the site for other recreational facilities; and

– it would encourage outdoor physical activity.

“The Optimist Club believes in this community and is confident we will be supported by it, to make this project a success,” said Culp.

Council asked staff to come back with a report to the parks and recreation committee on Oct. 4. The committee will make a recommendation to council for the Oct. 17 meeting.
