Fire ban lifted in two townships

Based on rainfall last week the open air burn ban has been lifted in Centre Wellington and Mapleton.

On July 5, Wellington County fire chiefs made the decision to prohibit all open air burning within the county.

“Centre Wellington has received a significant amount of rainfall, which gives us confidence in lifting the ban at this time,” Centre Wellington Fire Chief Brad Patton said in a July 30 press release. “Our first concern is safety.  With the extreme dryness of all vegetation in Wellington county over the past month and little rain, we could not take a chance allowing open air burning. However now that Mother Nature has blessed us with the rainfall, we can safely lift the ban.”

On Aug. 3, Mapleton also lifted its burn ban, leaving only Erin, Puslinch and Minto under the prohibition.

Open air burning is defined as any fire outside of a building, including bonfires, campfires, burn barrels, outdoor fireplaces/chimineas or any other fires. Fire department officials are reminding residents a fire permit is required for all open air burning within the townships.

By Aug. 4, Puslinch Township partially lifted its ban on open air fires to allow campground camp fires.
