Graduation rates in the Wellington Catholic District School Board are well above the provincial average.
On May 4 Premier Kathleen Wynne announced that Ontario’s five-year high school graduation rate has increased to 85.5% – the highest level in the province’s history. The four-year graduation rate is 78.3%
Wellington Catholic has a four-year graduation rate of 86% and a five-year graduation rate of 90%. Both of these rates are well above the provincial average.
“Our excellent results speak to the tremendous work and dedication of our staff, administration, parents and most importantly, the goal setting and hard work of students themselves,” said director of education Tamara Nugent in a press release.
For the second year in a row, the Ministry of Education is publishing school board level graduation rates from across the province.
The report includes a summary of graduation rates for students who entered Grade 9 in any provincially funded school in the 2010-11 school year.
Based on a detailed analysis of education paths, the report outlines four and five-year cohort graduation rates for all school boards.
“Student success and well-being at Wellington Catholic is critically important,” said superintendent of education Brian Capovilla. “In addition to providing students with engaging learning experiences, there are a variety of proactive strategies that we use to monitor student progress to ensure they reach their individual goals. Although we are pleased with these results, we know that success is unique to each student and it is our mission to help each student achieve that success.”
Gunia Rutkowski, a student at St. John Bosco Catholic High School, exemplifies what those supports look like.
The programming at the school is highly specialized and individualized to promote high levels of student success.
“St. John Bosco has a completely different vibe than other schools in an immensely positive way,” she said. “It is a very welcoming community and we know that all staff want us to succeed.
“They are very understanding, always happy to see us at school, and always willing to provide guidance. ”
