Over $143,000 raised for Alzheimer Society

“The Alzheimer Society deeply thanks everyone for attending and supporting the inaugural Walk for Alzheimer’s on Jan. 31,” said Nancy Kauffman-Lambert, chair of the board of directors, Alzheimer Society Waterloo Wellington.

“The walk, formerly known as the Walk for Memories, is the society’s largest annual fundraiser. No matter what name we call the walk we continue to be dedicated to helping all people living with dementia, their care partners, and families by providing them with information, education, and support.”

This year walkers, their supporters, and sponsors have given over $143,000. Participants walked indoors in Cambridge, Guelph, Mount Forest, and Waterloo and walked to honour someone they love.

Wearing badges that read “I’m walking for …” reminded walkers of why they were there. The proceeds for this event support the 55% fundraising required to ensure vital local programs and services are available in the Waterloo Wellington communities.

Officials thank the regional sponsor Your Neighbourhood Credit Union (YNCU) for its ongoing support for the walk. YNCU and some of its staff joined the ribbon cutting to start the walk in Cambridge.

Audi Kitchener-Waterloo, a new Gold Slipper sponsor this year, brought a beautiful car to the Guelph walk and it was a big hit with participants.

Officials also thank Silver Sneaker sponsor Fleet Image Inc. and Bronze Boots sponsors CIBC, Graham Matthew, Preston Medical Pharmacy, and the Village of Riverside Glen.

Cambridge Centre and The Old Quebec Street Shoppes and Office Suites once again allowed the walk to use their venues at no cost. Every gift is important to help achieve the goal, said officials.

The top overall fundraisers:

– Top Individual Fundraiser: Monique and Gerard Laderoute;

– Top Team: Memory Boosters

– Top Corporate Team: Sun Life Waterloo; and

– VIA Rail: Kimberly Marges won two round-trip passes to Montreal.
