County approves trail funds

Wellington County will provide the Town of Minto with up to $7,171 for improvements to the Clifford Trail and Palmerston Trail.

The trail funding program,  approved by Wellington County council in February of 2015, provides up to $50,000 per municipality to be applied to one or more municipally-endorsed projects with funds to be matched by the municipality or community groups. The program is scheduled to end on Nov. 30, 2018.

County council approved a planning committee recommendation to provide the requested funds at the Jan. 28 meeting.

The Clifford Trail encircles Clifford and also loops through the village’s Rotary Park, along a rail line, and through a regrowth area. The Palmerston Trail is a rail trail from Palmerston going north and looping back. Both trails are identified in the county’s Active Transportation Plan.

In 2015 Minto spent $14,343 on trail projects, including outdoor message boards, relocation of a water fountain and tree planting.
