Victoria Street pedestrian bridge considered in budget talks

It could be good News for pedestrians in downtown Elora.

As noted in pre-budget discussions on Nov. 9, Centre Wellington councillors are considering spending $1 million for a Victoria Street pedestrian bridge in 2017.

If council moves ahead with the project, it may require delaying the proposed Middlebrook Road reconstruction until 2018 and 2019.

Work would begin soon and will include consultation with the Elora BIA, Pearle Hospitality, and the community.

Restoration of the Victoria Street bridge is one aspect of the overall plan for Pearle Hospitality’s Elora Mill project. The developer is looking to assist in the creation of two bridge structures.

The glass-enclosed walkway across the river is part of the hotel complex, but in previous discussions, CAO Andy Goldie noted the developer is ready to work with the township to ensure the development of a second pedestrian bridge across the Grand River, making use of the piers from the former Victoria Street bridge. Final division of construction costs has yet to be determined.
