Area beaches ‘posted’ due to E. coli levels

The weather could be near perfect this weekend (Aug. 22 and 23), but residents may want to think twice before swimming at some local beaches.

The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) and the local health unit have "posted" several area beaches where E. coli levels are above Ministry of Health guidelines.

The health unit and GRCA recommend "swimming should be avoided or that individuals swim at their own risk" at the following Wellington County beaches: Conestogo Lake, Guelph Lake (main beach) and Rockwood.

From late May to Labour Day, the GRCA and local health units regularly test the water at designated beaches in Grand River Parks to ensure the water meets ministry guidelines.

For information on beaches outside the county, visit the website for those areas' health units.
