The Wellington County Historical Society is gearing up to celebrate the 175th Anniversary of the proclamation of the District of Wellington.
The society is making plans to celebrate the occasion during Doors Open Centre Wellington on June 20 at the Wellington County Museum and Archives.
The event will include an appearance by actor Gary Bryant portraying the Duke of Wellington. County council, at the request of the society, agreed at its May 28 meeting to invite the current Duke of Wellington, Arthur Charles Valerian Wellesley, who was born 1945.
The museum is joining the society in organizing the celebration, along with the South Wellington Coin Club, which is proposing to commemorate the occasion with a reproduction of the District 5 shilling note, and a metal token, possibly bearing an image of the court house (which, with a jail, was a required element of becoming a district).
