Society”™s plant sale rescheduled to May 23

The Fergus Horticultural Society’s annual sale will now take place on Saturday, May 23. The location of the sale is the stone house next to Fergus’ Sportsplex on Belsyde Avenue, from 8 – 11am (rain or shine).

Society members felt that postponing the sale two weeks would give extra time for spring growth to finally show through the ground. Because of the late spring, most perennials are just beginning to pop up.

Gardeners know that this is a popular event and begin to line up early to get the best selection. Often, some varieties are in limited quantity.

The sale is always a hit because of the extensive variety of local perennials. These plants are selected from the society’s gardens as well as member’s personal collections.

Experience proves that perennials must be split every three or four years to keep them vigorous. If they are not, they will soon decline. Surplus plants are potted up and brought to the annual sale.

Plants at the sale have been conditioned to suit local weather conditions. Many are large specimens. As in other years, the collection will have rare, old favourities, newer introductions, herbs, ground covers and shade dwellers.

Society members will be on hand to assist with gardening questions.

Proceeds from the sale support the society’s projects throughout Fergus. The society tends 25 gardens.

Society memberships will be available which entitle shoppers to a 10% discount.
