United Way provides $10,000 to Women In Crisis

United Way Guelph Wellington Dufferin is providing $10,000 in emergency funding to Guelph-Wellington Women In Crisis to assist after damage to the emergency shelter, Marianne’s Place, due to a flood.

The February flood affected the women’s shelter significantly, with extensive damage to three floors of the building. Shelter doors remained open and service is continuing to the best of the group’s ability. Surrounding shelters are helping when needed.

“Women In Crisis and Marianne’s Shelter provide vital services to our community. Many women and children escaping from violent situations rely on the shelter to provide them with a safe haven,” said Ken Dardano, executive director of United Way. “Thanks to our donors, United Way is able to provide emergency assistance to  … Women In Crisis.”

United Way’s emergency funding contribution will assist with covering a large insurance deductible, and materials and services to get the shelter running to full capacity again.

United Way Guelph Wellington Dufferin currently funds a network of 86 programs at 53 local agencies in Guelph and Wellington and Dufferin counties. For 75 years, United Way Guelph Wellington Dufferin has worked to monitor and meet the pressing social needs of our community.

Directed by a volunteer board, managed by committed staff and supported by thousands of donors, United Way works with partners in all sectors to identify needs and raise funds to support programs in response to those needs.
