Pharmasave pharmacist Gail Choma spoke to seniors at the Merry Makers monthly meeting about avoiding falls and sleepless nights on Feb. 5 at Jamesway Manor in Clifford.
She said a number of factors contribute to falls including certain medications, sleeping aids, mobility issues, weaker knees, weak muscles, the environment, scatter mats, pets underfoot, showers and bath tubs, vision problems, poor lighting, and trying to get somewhere too fast.
Canes, walkers, and non-slip footwear, along with good lighting, are all beneficial aids, she noted.
Low blood sugar or low blood pressure could be the culprits when someone feels dizzy from getting up too quickly, she explained.
Choma recommended a visit to a pharmacist and to check that medications are delivering optimal effects. Vitamin D supplements are known to help maintain muscle strength with exercise.
She offered advice for seniors who fall while alone:
– try not to panic. Rest and assess your injuries;
– try to help yourself; and
– try to keep warm until help arrives.
Choma pointed out quality of sleep could be affected by someone’s snoring, sleep apnea, dry mouth, water works, and medications. She recommended avoiding caffeine laden drinks, trying a humidifier, and identifying which medications may have a tendency to cause wakefulness.
A walk after supper and reading and resting before bed as well as soothing music and meditation could help, she noted.
Maintaining a regular rhythm of waking, sleeping, eating, and exercising for optimal health is recommended.
The next meeting will be March 5 at Jamesway. All those 50 or more are welcome to join or visit to see what the meetings are about. Call Marion Wylie 519-327-8596 for information on dates, times, and guest speakers.
