Improving lung health with world COPD day

Nov. 19 was World COPD Day.

This day is organized by the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) in collaboration with health care professionals and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patient groups throughout the world.

Its aim is to raise awareness about COPD and improve COPD care throughout the world. COPD is the fourth leading cause of death in Canada. A 2011 Ontario study has shown that one in four people will likely experience COPD in their lifetime.

“It’s never too late to lead an active life,” said a participant of a COPD pulmonary rehabilitation program that was recently completed at Groves Memorial Community Hospital in Fergus.

Pulmonary rehabilitation is recommended as the standard of care in the treatment and rehabilitation of individuals with COPD. Exercise training, including aerobic and strength training, is the cornerstone of pulmonary rehabilitation programs. The rehabilitation helps individuals learn about breathing techniques, medications, nutrition, relaxation, oxygen, travel, how to do everyday tasks with less shortness of breath, and how to stay healthy and avoid COPD exacerbations.

Participants leave with a home exercise program and options to continue exercising in the community.

Groves hospital and Upper Grand Family Health Team officials say they are proud of the program that is available to the residents of Centre Wellington. New sessions are to begin in January.

Speak to a physician about pulmonary rehabilitation to get registered or contact the Upper Grand Family Health Team.
