Bike camp helps those with special needs pedal toward their dreams

For the 4th consecutive year, KidsAbility is proud to host iCan Bike.

This unique program uses adapted equipment, trained professionals, and volunteers to help children and youth with special needs realize the freedom that comes with riding a bike independently.

With 75 minutes of instruction per day over five days, over 80% of riders achieve success by the end of camp.

Thanks to the generous support from GoodLife Kids Foundation and the City of Cambridge, registration is now open for the one week camp held July 14 to 18 at the Preston Memorial Arena in Cambridge.

iCan Bike is a collaborative program run in conjunction with local non-profits and iCan Shine, an organization that teaches individuals with disabilities to ride a conventional two-wheel bicycle. By working with local organizations in communities across North America, such as KidsAbility, iCan Shine provides this muchanticipated camp that would not be available in communities otherwise.

Last year, 40 local children and youth participated in the intense week-long program, with the majority of them realizing success. KidsAbility is proud to once again present iCan Bike in support of the life journey of all our kids and is actively seeking volunteers to help make this program possible.

The cost of the camp is $175 per person and subsidies are available. To be eligible, riders must be between 8 and 18 years old, reside in Waterloo Region or Guelph-Wellington, have a disability and be able to walk without an assistive device such as a walker or cane. Riders must be able to side-step quickly to both sides and have a minimum inseam measurement of 20 inches and weigh no more than 220 pounds.
