Church group tours clean water centre

Eleanor Currie organized a Bruce Presbyterial United Church Women’s Stewardship field trip tour of the Walkerton Clean Water Centre on May 5.

The group heard  a presentation by Leona Cunningham, who worked on infrastructure funding programs to meet new standards after the inquiry into the Walkerton water crisis of 2000. The centre was opened in 2010. Now a state-of-the-art training and research facility is in operation to safeguard drinking water and help prevent any water crisis. Over 48,500 operators have trained at the centre.

The centre also opeates mobile training units, including one stationed in Thunder Bay at which five operators  can be trained at one time. The group was led through the centre by scientist Tory Colling and technician Laura Zettler who explained the technical aspects of the filtration and purification systems.
