Minto council has directed staff to provide a report on cemetery maintenance procedure and standards after councillor Ron Faulkner stated he feels local cemeteries could better cared for.
“I want to make it really clear that this is not in any way a criticism of our staff, or neglect, or anything like that in respect to our cemeteries,” stated Faulkner at the June 4 council meeting. “You know how proud I am of our staff and how hard they work,” he added.
However, he continued, “I do strongly feel that there’s a need for extra care to be given to our cemeteries. I have walked all three and there is a definite need for some TLC.”
Faulkner requested that staff be directed to prepare the report and said he would decide on what directions to take after reviewing it.
Deputy mayor Terry Fisk added that he had recently been asked when the grass would be cut at the Harriston Cemetery.
“I know Clifford was done yesterday and I think they’re in Harriston today,” said public works director Brian Hansen.
“Hopefully it’s a one-off,” replied Fisk.
“This is the first complaint I’ve ever heard about this year,” said Hansen.
