A local day care provider is concerned with the condition of a downtown bridge she uses regularly.
Lindsay Almeida of McNab Street in Elora wrote to the Advertiser recently stating there are “huge pieces” missing from the sidewalk along the bridge crossing the Grand River at Metcalfe Street in the village.
She believes those holes will result in injuries.
“I hate to imagine what may happen to an animal or small child,” she wrote.
Almeida said she runs a day care in Elora and crosses the bridge regularly as she walks children to reach local programs such as the Ontario Early Years Centre play group and story time at the Elora Library.
“Venturing out with a group of children is already a big undertaking, but to take them out and to put everyone at risk by simply crossing a bridge is ridiculous,” she wrote.
The bridge crossing the Grand River at Metcalfe Street is owned and maintained by Wellington County.
County engineer Gord Ough stated via email that the bridge is due for repairs as early as this summer.
Ough stated those repairs are minor in nature and not on the scale of a bridge rehab or rebuild, but stressed the “deficiencies” highlighted in Almeida’s email could expedite the work.
