Downtown Fergus is painting the town tartan!

You can’t keep a good highlander quiet for long and they’ll be out in droves on April 13 celebrating the 6th annual Tartan Day.

In partnership with the Fergus Scottish Festival & Highland Games, the Fergus BIA and Elora Fergus Tourism, downtown pubs, restaurants and merchants which have joined forces to help celebrate the community’s Celtic roots. Festivities take place from 11:30am to 5pm both inside and out.

Kicking off the festivities is the Kilted Kilometre run hosted by the Highland Rugby Club.

All are welcome to join in, but a kilt is a requirement. First place woman, man, senior and under 16 wins a free weekend pass for this year’s Fergus Scottish Festival. Sign up, pre-race at Frabert’s Fresh Food at 11am.

New this year are the Heavy Events demonstrations and McKiddie Highland Games beside the Fergus General Store (1 to 4pm). Find one’s fortune in a cup at The Bookery tea leaf readings (1 to 4pm), feast on Scottish cream teas and hear tartan tales at The Fergus Grand Theatre (1 to 4pm) or relax at the children’s story time at Roxanne’s Reflections.

All this and plenty of Scottish sweet treats at Fergies and the Scottish Corner Shop.

Always a fan favourite is the free historical walking tour. Costumed characters will help you discover hidden treasures of the rich, colourful and Scottish past of this grand town. Tour meets in front of Fergus Library at 2pm.

With three wandering pipe bands to tilt yer kilt to, visitors will be toe tapping in no time.

Fergus Pipe Band and Grand Celtic Pipe Band return along with Men with Small Pipes.

Join the kilted krawl and let the pipers parade participants to all six venues which include the Breadalbane Inn, Brew House on the Grand, Van Gali’s, O’Briens Tap House, D’s Sports Bar and Grill, and the Goofie Newfie.
