Officials with the Wellington County Museum and Archives are inviting residents to join them from March 10 to 14, at 1 to 4pm, as they explore All Things Scottish in this year of the Scottish Homecoming.
Scottish immigration and traditions have had a huge influence on the development of Wellington County and each afternoon of the March break will highlight a different theme with great activities, demonstrations and special guests. Join us for some good fun as we explore some of the unusual and some of the traditional themes of Scottish culture.
Each afternoon is a drop-in format with a different theme:
– March 10, Tartans and Tales: weaving demonstrations, Scottish genealogy and some classic Scottish tales;
– March 11, Music and More Tales: enjoy the sounds of the Celtic harp; have your say about the Loch Ness Monster…truth or fiction? You can decide;
– March 12, Kitchen Ceilidh: food and music go hand and hand in any traditional Scottish celebration. Listen to the pipes and drum and taste some traditional Scottish treats;
– March 13, Dancing and “Wee Doggies”: dancers from the Blue Bonnet Lassies School of Highland Dance will be on hand; learn everything you ever wanted to know about highland dance and visit with a “wee” Scottish doggie, learn the legend of the Greyfriar’s Bobbie; and
– March 14, Highlander Brain and Brawn, join us for an afternoon of mental and physical feats. Our version of the “heavy” events and a playful round of “Scottish Jeopardy.”
Each day includes hands-on activities, crafts, games and a scavenger hunt. Admission is by donation. Children must be accompanied by adults at all times.
The museum is located on Wellington Road 18, between Fergus and Elora.
