Volunteers are just one ingredient in the success of Chilifest, a local fundraiser held on Feb. 7 in support of the Community Resource Centre of North and Centre Wellington.
“This is our 17th annual [Chilifest],” said Ron MacKinnon, executive director of the resource centre. “We do it every year in support of our outreach and support programs.”
All the funds, after expenses, go directly to those programs, he explained.
“The outreach support program works with those most at need in the community. The dollars all go to very, very good use.”
Much of the work kicks off on the Tuesday prior to the Friday event. At that time volunteers accept delivery of the groceries required to make the chili.
“We work closely with FreshCo for that and we very much appreciate that help,” said MacKinnon. “On Wednesday, we begin to cook …”
MacKinnon estimated half of the chili is cooked on Wednesday, the other half on Thursday.
“It’s all stored safely in a refrigerator and then on the day of Chilifest, there are 12 volunteer drivers who deliver meals, and a great number of volunteers here at the Legion to get the day going.”
In addition to delivered meals, organizers also offer a sit-down meal at the Legion.
“We’re very appreciative of the Legion for its provision of space, and the Grand 92.9 which provides promotion of the event as well.”
He also added thanks to the Wellington Advertiser for its support.
