Joint liability issue reviewed

It’s already taken care of.

While Perth-Wellington MPP Randy Pettapiece recently wrote to council asking for support of a resolution asking the government to deal with insurance reform as it applies to local municipalities, it is something the township acted on several months ago.

Pettapiece stated “rising municipal insurance premiums must be reined in.”

He said that for years, municipalities have asked the province to address joint and several liability, which is the primary contributor to rising premiums.

“Municipalities, often targeted as insurers of last resort, can be on the hook for massive damage awards even if they are deemed just one percent responsible.”

He added “Municipalities have said that we in Ontario cannot afford to wait any longer. I agree. As a former member of a municipal council, I fully appreciate the impact of rapidly rising insurance premiums. It is unfair and unrealistic for the provincial government to allow this situation to continue.”

But it’s a bandwagon, Puslinch councillors are already on. In September 2013 councillors passed a resolution asking for much the same thing. Mayor Dennis Lever asked that the Puslinch resolution be forwarded to Pettapiece.
