Fergus river land development to begin in summer/fall 2014

According to the Fergus BIA, the downtown Fergus river land redevelopment will begin construction summer/fall 2014.

The plan created by the Fergus Business Improvement Association (BIA) incorporates the expansion of the County of Wellington’s Fergus Library Branch which is currently underway.

The river land redevelopment project was developed to incorporate expansion of the Fergus Library and additional public open space.

Township property was sold to the County of Wellington to allow for the library expansion.

The project includes site cleanup, new sanitary and storm sewer construction, re-alignment of  Menzie’s Lane to accommodate service delivery, operational, and emergency vehicle access

The intent is to provide improved pedestrian access and public spaces along Grand River.

Overall the cost of construction is estimated at $665,000.

The Fergus Library Branch renovation and expansion is underway. The classic Carnegie Library is tentatively scheduled to re-open in November 2014.

Some renovated Fergus Library branch features, include:

– a public meeting commons of 15,000 square feet;

– compliant with the Accessiblity for Ontarians with Disabilities Act;

– built using the County’s Green Legacy Building Standards;

– modern and interactive features for the community to enjoy;

– design complements both the built and natural environment;

– reading and study space with views of main street and the river;

– increased collections of library material;

– large public meeting room; and

– more public computers and WiFi access throughout the building.
