Students from the University of Guelph loaded a rental truck with cases of food and set out to spread Christmas cheer on Dec. 14. Through a meal exchange program at the school, students are asked to skip a meal and donate their meal points to the program. The points accumulate and are converted into donations for area help centres and food banks in need of assistance.
The students stopped at the Clifford Food Bank and stayed to enjoy some refreshments before driving in the less-than-ideal weather conditions.
Marion Agla told them stories about the generosity of the townspeople and businesses and of the growing need for support in the community, especially at this time of year. While they listened, they saw first hand how the holiday hampers were prepared for over 25 families. Food bank volunteers were packing boxes with cans and boxes of food and Christmas cookies to compliment a great turkey dinner.
Produce, eggs, bread, and frozen goods will be added when the people arrive to pick up their hampers.
Agla expressed appreciation to the students for their food and their help.
Student Vinoshe Jegutheeswaran said they were glad to help and felt it was a small token for them compared to the weekly and daily effort put forth by food bank volunteers.
