Red Hatters learn about “˜Laughter Yoga”™

The Mapleton Madhatters Red Hat group learned firsthand the benefits of a new health craze entitled “laughter yoga” at its November gathering.

Reduced stress, an immune system boost, digestive system stimulation, increased awareness and a greater enjoyment of living are all potential benefits, proponents contend.

After a casserole luncheon catered by the Drayton United Church Women, the fun-loving Red Hatters followed the lead of special guest instructor Dave Vervoort in a series of movements and breathing exercises designed to stimulate laughter and cultivate a spirit of joy.

Alternative treatment

Laughter yoga was developed in India about 20 years ago by Dr. Madan Katari who wanted to find an alternative way of treating patients suffering from illness related to stress. There are now more than 6,000 social laughter clubs around the world.
