The arena here will now feature posters on how to deal with mental health issues.
Wellington North township’s recreation committee approved the signs after a request from Myrna Hutchison whose son Steven, of Arthur, took his own life while attending university in 2012. The family tragedy prompted the mother and her husband Stu to create the Get in Touch for Hutch five-kilometre run or walk to raise awareness of mental health issues.
Councillor Sherry Burke, recreation committee chairperson, told council at its Nov. 18 meeting the signs will be in place on the ice surface boards and in the dressing rooms and will provide telephone numbers for those suffering from mental illness to call to get help.
“I think it’s important the community knows there are people out there to help them when they need it,” Burke told reporters after the council meeting.
Council endorsed the committee recommendation.
