Safe Communities Wellington County has announced the hiring of Sarah Bowers-Peter to the position of community development coordinator starting this month.
Officials say Bowers-Peter brings “a wealth of experience” from working with community volunteers to involvement in fundraising projects and will be able “to broaden the horizons of our Safe Communities initiative through social media and by working with local committees throughout the county.”
Safe Communities Wellington County co-chairs OPP Sergeant Jack Hunjan and county councillor Gary Williamson agree that it was time to actively promote new and existing programs that will help to reduce injuries within the county.
The hiring of Bowers-Peter is the next step in attaining the goal of making Wellington County a safer place to live, learn, work and play, the co-chairs stated in a media release.
“It’s time to move ahead and get more concrete things done,” Williamson told the Advertiser. “Sarah will be our go-to person.”
The coordinator is also expected to undertake fundraising campaigns to raise money to pay for programs the committee is planning. The position pays $15,000 over a nine-month period. Bowers-Peter is expected to assist with programs initiated by the committee. The position would require about two days of work per week.
The safe communities committee, which recently received national designation, has chosen three categories on which it will focus: injuries and deaths resulting from falls, on- and off -road accidents, and self-harm.
