Dr. William Lawless was last mayor of Harriston, and first mayor of Minto

The first mayor of the Town of Minto died this past weekend at the age of 76.

Dr. William Robert Lawless died on Nov. 10 after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Lawless was the last pre-amalgamation mayor of the Town of Harriston from 1995 to 1998 and mayor of the newly-created Town of Minto from 1999 to 2000. He was also active on local hospital and school boards.

For many years, Lawless operated a large animal veterinary practice based in Harriston and later worked with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. He was also active and involved in many community organizations, including Kinsmen, Big Brothers, the Masonic Lodge and the United Church.

A Masonic Lodge memorial service was scheduled for Nov. 14 at 6:30pm at the Hardy Lee Funeral Home in Harriston. The funeral service will be held at Mount Forest United Church on Nov.15 at 1pm.
