Cultural mapping plan released

Cultural mapping of the township is moving into the next phase now that preliminary work and public meetings establishing its framework have been concluded.

Council put its approval on the document at its meeting on Nov. 4.

“Our first step from the plan is to establish a cultural roundtable that will define priorities and implement recommended actions from the plan, taking into consideration available resources,” April Marshall, tourism, marketing and promotion manager for the township told the Advertiser after the document was released.

“We are stressing the fact that the plan is not to be seen as a static document, but rather one that will evolve based on new needs and opportunities that will emerge in the course of implementing the plan. We recognize the powerful role played by cultural mapping and cultural planning as tools for growing our local economy and enhancing quality of life.”

Wellington North has joined Minto and Centre Wellington, as the local municipalities that have a cultural mapping plan in place.

“Wellington North has identified 270 cultural assets: 74 cultural facilities and spaces, 62 cultural enterprises, 46 festivals and events, 36 community cultural organizations, 32 natural heritage and 20 cultural heritage,” Marshall said.

The plan also includes establishing a website outlining the plan and its objectives.

Mayor Ray Tout thanked residents, volunteers and staff for their input in getting information to put the initial cultural plan together.

“I think moving forward it gives us a better idea in Wellington North that the word ‘culture’ encompasses more,” the mayor said.

The plan was put together by consultant Greg Baeker of Millier Dickinson Blais.
