A gala fundraiser held in Toronto recently raised $400,000 for the Mona Campbell Centre for Animal Cancer at the University of Guelph’s Ontario Veterinary College (OVC).
More than 300 pet lovers attended the A Walk in the Park gala, held Oct. 17 at Daniels Spectrum. Proceeds from the event support the OVC Pet Trust Fund, which has now raised $13 million for the cancer centre, which opened in 2012.
“What an amazing success story. We are so fortunate to have such a passionate network of supporters dedicated to our cause – their generosity is truly inspiring,” said Dr. Elizabeth Stone, OVC dean.
“On behalf of the College, congratulations to everyone involved in this fantastic event. We particularly want to thank Emmanuelle Gattuso and Myles Mindham, the co-chairs of the Gala Commitee – their creativity and dedication is inspiring to all of us.”
Opened in 2012, the Mona Campbell Centre for Animal Cancer is the most advanced comprehensive centre for companion animal cancer treatment and investigation in Canada.
As a part of the OVC Health Sciences Centre, it includes a linear accelerator for sophisticated radiation therapy and coordinated care from many different specialties such as surgery, medical oncology, imaging, cardiology, anesthesia and critical care.
“Gifts from this year’s gala will ensure that we can continue to provide the very best cancer care, acquire leading-edge technology, support training for veterinary cancer specialists, and conduct comparative cancer research that will help pets and people,” Stone said.
