Open house planned for child development program

An innovative research project that began over 20 years ago is opening its doors to the public. On Oct. 25, individuals are invited to visit both the Shelldale and the Onward Willow Centres, the two sites where preventative programs and services occur.

“We are inviting people to learn how we partner with other agencies to support families,” says Dana Nuttley, Co-Chair of the Management Board.

The Better Beginnings, Better Futures sites are presently funded by the Ministry of Children and Youth Services. Better Beginnings, Better Futures started as a provincial research project in 1991. It was the first long-term primary prevention research project of its kind in Canada. The research looked at all aspects of a community for change including the children, the families, as well as the community as a whole. Better Beginnings, Better Futures research focused on the long-term impacts of early childhood development.

The Better Beginnings, Better Futures model is designed to prevent young children in low income, high risk neighbourhoods from experiencing poor developmental outcomes, which then require expensive health, education and social services. The Better Beginnings model has been implemented in eight socio-economically disadvantaged communities including Guelph.

“The Better Beginnings, Better Futures model empowers families and individuals to actively engage in their neighbourhood,” said Randalin Ellery, coordinator of the Guelph & Wellington Task Force for Poverty Elimination. “Offering space and supports in a centralized location not only improves accessibility, but creates community.”

It was found that all eight sites accomplished three things. Theydeveloped universal comprehensive prevention programs, formed successful partnerships with service providers, and engaged and involved community residents in many aspects of the programs

Better Beginnings, Better Futures is community participation and ownership, inclusive, democratic community management, new ways of thinking, and a strength-based participatory approach which leads to improved child development.

The Oct 25, open house runs from 10am to 2pm with the| official welcome at 11am at Onward Willow Better Beginnings, Better Futures  20 Shelldale Cres.
