Food donations needed to support EWCS food bank

With the need increasing in the community for so many, the East Wellington Community Services food bank program is in need of many basic items so the organization can continue to support the more than 220 families who rely on this program to help them have enough to eat.

“Locally, through East Wellington Community Services, our food bank program sees more than 1,100 client visits per year from individuals needing assistance. From January to August of this year, our food banks in Rockwood and Erin have seen a 17 per cent increase in the total amount of food distributed – or a 13% increase in the number of families served compared to last year. This is quite significant,” said Erika Westcott, manager of community and volunteer services.

“Food drives and the donations we receive are so vital to this program so that we can continue to provide the support for so many in our community who rely on this program to for their basic food support.”

Items that are in most need for the food bank include toilet paper, hearty soups and stews, tomato and vegetable soups, healthy choice hot and cold cereals, jam, peanut butter, sugar, children’s school snacks, coffee, tea, pasta and sauce, canned salmon, turkey, ham and chicken and baked beans.

Thanking those who have supported the program in the past, Westcott said said,

“Your donations have made, and continue to make, a huge difference in our ability to meet the needs of those within the food bank program. We couldn’t do it without you!”
