Mayor questions council minutes … again

Passage of the minutes here seems to take considerably longer than in many municipalities.

On Sept. 3, it took roughly a half hour for council to address the minutes and business arising.

Mayor Lou Maieron took exception to the minutes of a previous meeting which had  dealt with the water department being located in the former hydro building.

Maieron believed the minutes did not adequately detail the discussions and points he raised.

“I think these points need to be added.”

While a report was requested on the department, its finances and possible relocation.

Councillor John Brennan asked specifically what the mayor wanted to add.

“Pretty much what I just said,” Maieron responded.

Councillor Barb Tocher said she would prefer the additional points not be added to the minutes.

Tocher said there was a discussion, the points raised were from one person at the council table.

She recommended the minutes simply state there was a discussion in general terms.

Maieron again attempted to have the minutes include the points he’d raised.

He said if the minutes are to be more than just the resolutions and decisions, “then some of the more salient points need to be reflected.”

Tocher said it also points out why the minutes should not get into descriptive – other than what delegations present to council.

“Otherwise you get into the discussion as to what to include and who said what. That is why I think council has taken the decision that the minutes reflect resolutions and directions provided by council.”

Maieron countered that the minutes often contained more information than he would like to see.
