Town council here has endorsed the Road Watch Canada program.
The decision to endorse the program was made by council at its Dec. 20 meeting following a presentation two weeks earlier by Don Senek, chairman of the town’s Safe Community Committee, who was joined by OPP officer Todd Pridham.
Road Watch Canada was started in the mid-1990s following a traffic accident near Caledon that claimed the lives of eight young people. It was started by Marion Morrison who knew one of the young people killed.
Wellington County has already signed on to support the program. The county has allowed for the erection of signs along county roads informing motorists the Road Watch program is in place.
The program allows anyone to submit a report on the Road Watch website when they see dangerous driving on roads. The report is also forwarded to the local police or OPP detachment. An officer will contact the motorist if a second infraction is reported and will visit the motorist if a third incident is reported. Subsequent infractions could lead to formal charges.
The safety committee will administer the road program and is expected to raise money for roadside signs.
